Increasing pulling power for my Chevy Silverado

Edited by Admin

Hi Motor Ops, I have a 2008 Chevy Silverado that we use to pull our trailer. We are shopping around for a new trailer but find ourselves limited by the power to pull some of the steep inclines out west with our current setup. Can you recommend a product that can increase our pulling power so we won;t wreck our transmission or kill our gas mileage if we get a bigger trailer.

thanks, Nicole

Hi Nicole,

Thanks for posting your question up here.

There are a few things that you can do to safely increase your pulling potential with your truck.

Depending on the weight that your are pulling you can probably get away with a simply with an Auto Cal loaded with one of our DSP5 tunes. This will provide you with a setting for just about any driving situation that you will encounter and the ease of switching to that setting with just the rotation of a switch.

The tunes that we provide on this DSP5 tune are:
1. Optimized Stock
2. Heavy Tow w/ Turbine brake
3. Light Tow w/ Turbine brake
4. Sport Economy
5. Performance

To address your issue directly you would really benefit from both of the tow tunes with the added 40 RWHP (Heavy Tow) or added 60 RWHP (Light Tow). Aside from the gained power the turbine brake would save you a fortune in brakes. You mentioned the difficulty pulling up steep grades and I can only imagine that you run into difficulty slowing that weight down when you are descending down those grades as well. The turbine brake is will become one of your best friends once you experience its stopping power.

If you were still having issues with pulling the grades after a tune as described above you really need to look towards more airflow to efficiently cool your truck as well as get more power out of it. That can be done via Twin turbo applications such as a S475 over stock turbo kit.

The DSP5 tune should give you a solid starting point and will get your foot in the door to the world of diesel performance; I promise you won't be disappointed!
